My afternoon with Underdog Railroad Rescue

I recently spent two hours with Jody and the gang from Underdog Railroad Rescue. The group was hosting a dog adoption at Salty’s Dog and Cat Shop on Mississippi in Portland, and asked if I’d be interested in photographing a few of the dogs available to show off their many good sides. I was happy to do so — if you’re not familiar with Underdog Railroad Rescue, they’re an organization in Portland that rescues dogs from overcrowded, high-kill shelters in southern California. You can find out more about the organization on Facebook… and here are a few of the dogs!

sneak peek: sheena’s bridal session

This session was a dream. I can’t wait to share it in full in a few weeks!
A cozy and colorful family session for three

Caroline, Matt, and Beatrice are a few of my favorite people — these three are the sweetest family and lovely to be around! Caroline told me ahead of time that there would be COLOR involved in their session, but I didn’t realize just how colorful it would be until I saw them. Let me say this: I loooooove color, and I think they rock it well.
a new approach to wedding packages
I’ve been giving my wedding pricing a lot of thought.. and I mean a lot. While it’s easy for me to build one or two packages and ask you to choose from them, it is lately occurring to me that it might be a whole lot easier (and preferable) for everyone involved if I let YOU tell ME what you need.
So I’ve totally restructured my pricing page. Instead of one rate that includes a list of things you may or may not want (since not everyone is into engagement photos, for example) I’m asking you to help me create the perfect wedding package for your day.

Here’s how it’ll work:
Visit my contact page and tell me the following: your name, how to contact you, the date of your wedding, your anticipated wedding photography budget (options range from less than $1000 up to $2500), and what matters most to you when it comes to your wedding photography. Not interested in a wedding album? No problem! Definitely want printing rights? We can make it happen. I’m happy to honor every request unless I’m already booked on your date — once you send over your info, I’ll email you back with a suggested package based on your preferences, and we’ll start scheming.
It’s really as simple as that: you tell me what you need, and you’ll get it.
PS: This is open to ANY wedding — not just those in Portland.
Modern Dance: playing with motion
Confession time! I spent three semesters at the first university I enrolled in a modern dance class. I knew nothing about dance but had harbored a serious desire to be a ballerina from the time I was eleven or so (in other words, too late to really “be” a ballerina), and I was thrilled to discover that you could start modern dance later in life. I fell happily into the world of Isadora and Martha, and seriously loved my classes. Fast forward to that last semester, when all of the sudden I realized that college is actually when you’re supposed to take classes that will go towards your degree… not modern dance classes because they’re amazingly fun and wonderful.
I still wish I had stuck with it, if only because it’d be a great story to tell. My son is currently enrolled in a parent-and-me ballet class, and his teacher owns a modern dance company. We schemed up a few ideas for a session with some of her dancers the other day.. and I’m just totally in love. This was one of my first opportunities to play with motion in this way — it turns out a bride and groom twirling on the dance floor is very different from a modern dancer leaping down the aisle at a local grocery store.
This is the first installment in quite a few that we’ve planned, and I LOVE IT:
